A branded podcast is a show a brand pays for and presents, made to be worth hearing on its own terms. It is a different purchase from podcast advertising, where a brand buys a read inside someone else's show. With a branded podcast the brand owns the premise, chooses the subject and decides who hosts, and it also takes on the job of finding an audience. Most branded podcasts take one of three shapes: a narrative season, a company-hosted series or a conversation show, and any of the three can be filmed for YouTube as well as recorded.

Branded podcasts and podcast ads are different buys
Podcast advertising buys attention that a show has already built. The IAB's buyer and seller checklist names three creative types for those ads: host-read, announcer-read and brand-produced spots (IAB, October 2023). Most of them now reach listeners through dynamic insertion, where an ad server stitches the spot into the episode when it is downloaded. By the IAB's count, dynamically inserted ads brought in more than 90% of US podcast ad revenue in 2023 (IAB, October 26, 2023).
A branded podcast works the other way round. The brand pays for development and production, and the show has to earn its listeners. That makes it slower to start than an ad flight, and it gives the brand something an ad cannot: a whole episode in which its subject, its people or its point of view is the reason someone pressed play.
The two are often used together. A brand that launches a show usually promotes it with ads in other podcasts, and a brand that buys reads can learn from them which audiences respond before it commissions anything of its own.
Three shapes most branded podcasts take
The narrative season
A reported, scripted series with an arc across a set number of episodes. McDonald's The Sauce was a three-episode, investigative-style series about the 2017 Szechuan sauce promotion that went wrong, made with Studio@Gizmodo and Onion Labs and released on February 22, 2018 (Marketing Dive, February 21, 2018). eBay's Open for Business, made with Gimlet Creative, is described on its listing as a show "about building a business from the ground up," and its second season ran from March to April 2017 (Apple Podcasts).
The series hosted by the company
People from inside the business host, and the subject is the business itself. Trader Joe's launched Inside Trader Joe's on May 1, 2018 as a five-part series hosted by company executives and crew members, answering questions customers ask and telling stories from the company's history (PR Newswire, May 1, 2018). The show is still listed on the company's website (Trader Joe's).
The conversation show
A recurring host, a guest or a topic each episode, and no fixed end. This is the shape most often hosted by a creator, and the one most suited to video.
Video changed where podcasts are heard
A branded podcast planned as audio only now misses much of its audience. In June 2025 YouTube put its monthly podcast audience at one billion viewers (YouTube Blog, June 18, 2025). IAB and PwC's revenue report for 2025 says video is becoming the main way people consume podcasts, and the definition of a podcast is widening with it (IAB/PwC, April 2026).
So we plan most branded podcasts as a filmed show first, with the audio cut from the same session for podcast apps. A narrative season can still be audio-first, since its craft is sound, and it usually gets a YouTube version as audio with a designed visual.
How a branded podcast gets made
Development
The brand and the studio agree the subject, the shape and the host. The work produces a format document, a season outline, a pilot script or a pilot recording, and a plan for how the show will be released and measured. This is where most of the important decisions are made, and the cheapest place to change them.
Production
For a conversation show, a set with two or three cameras and good sound, recorded in blocks of several episodes. For a narrative season, research, interviews, narration, editing, music and a final mix. Both go through review rounds with the brand, which checks claims and approves each episode.
Release and promotion
A trailer ahead of the first episode, a fixed release day, clips for Shorts and social channels, and paid promotion to put the show in front of people who have not found it yet. Every episode says plainly who paid for it; our disclosure guide covers the rules.
How a branded podcast is measured
Downloads are the number reported most and the least useful alone. A download records a file sent, and it cannot show whether anyone listened.
Better measures track how much of each episode people hear and what they think afterwards. Pacific Content, which makes branded podcasts, ranks average consumption above downloads. That is the share of an episode a listener hears, and the studio reports 92% for Schwab's Choiceology and 98% for Dell's Trailblazers, two of its own productions (Pacific Content, April 11, 2019). Signal Hill Insights points to three yardsticks for branded podcasts: retention rate, total listen time and brand lift studies (Signal Hill Insights).
On YouTube the equivalents are watch time, average percentage viewed and returning viewers. A brand lift study sets people who saw the show against a matched group who did not. The full method is in our guide to measuring a branded series.
What drives the cost
Branded podcast budgets are not published. Our quote comes from the format, the cast and the run: how many episodes and how long each runs, whether the show is filmed, how much reporting and writing a narrative season needs, the host's fee, music and sound design, and the paid promotion in the release plan. The price is set at the end of development, once those choices are made.
When a branded podcast is the wrong choice
If the brand needs reach next quarter, buying reads in established shows gets there faster, and a branded podcast is better treated as a second step. If the brand has nothing it can show or say that a listener would choose to hear, a podcast will struggle whatever the budget. And if the subject is better seen than heard, a creator-hosted series or a docuseries is usually the stronger format, with the audio cut from it.
